The story of the cistern

Inside “O Exostis tou Stefanou”, you will find an old stone cistern, an authentic example of traditional architecture from Epirus.
The cistern was built in the mid-to-late 18th century and remained in continuous use until around 1974, when Kapesovo was connected to a mains water supply.
It is an underground water reservoir designed to collect rainwater through channels and roof gutters. Water flowed into the cistern and stayed cool and clean thanks to its depth and natural building materials.
The cistern is built of stone and kourasani, a traditional mortar of the period made from egg whites, powdered roof tiles, river sand and lime. The same material was used to build bridges, churches, schools and most buildings in old Epirus.
Kapesovo has two other cisterns: one at the school and one at the church. The café cistern, however, is the oldest and largest, not only in the village but throughout Epirus.
Today it is preserved as a living monument, recalling the ingenuity of earlier generations and their respect for water — the area’s most precious resource.
